By saying this we acknowledge that things may not be the absolute best, but we also shouldn’t complain too much. This shows honesty and modesty at the same time.

当事情不顺利的时候，我们想要诚实面对我们的困难，我们可以说——“I’ve been better.”，西方人习惯下意识地说:“I’m good, thanks.”但这并不总是我们的真实感受。
当生活并不美好的时候，“I’ve been better”是一个可以接受的回答。我们也可以说，“I’m hanging in there.”。
“This tells our listener that we have been encountering some obstacles, but we are still persevering.”。我们遇到了一些障碍，但我们仍然坚持。
